A Beautiful Vintage Smiths De Luxe Watch in 9k Gold with a Stunning Dial and Charming Gilt Furniture, c.1950s
Over time, the company expanded into precision watchmaking, supplying high-quality timepieces to clients such as the British Admiralty. In 1946, Smiths collaborated with the Ingersoll Watch Company to form the Anglo-Celtic Watch Co. Ltd., producing watches in Wales. A notable achievement was in 1953 when a Smiths “De Luxe” wristwatch accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary to the summit of Mount Everest.
Despite their success, Smiths ceased watch production in 1980, shifting focus to other engineering sectors. Today, vintage Smiths watches are cherished by collectors for their historical significance and British craftsmanship
What’s on Offer
This is a vintage Smiths De Luxe wristwatch, crafted by the renowned British watchmaker Smiths. Encased in 9k gold, this timepiece embodies classic mid-20th-century British horology, known for its fine craftsmanship and precision. The watch features a dial with elegant gilt alternate Arabic numerals and beautiful gold dauphine hands, there is a subtle seconds track along the outer edge. The dial is protected by a shatterproof acrylic crystal.
At the heart of this watch is a 17-jewel manual movement, reflecting Smiths commitment to high-quality, in-house British engineering. The Smiths De Luxe branding on the dial, along with the inscription “17 Jewels,” reinforces its premium status. The black leather strap adds a refined contrast to the gold case, making it a sophisticated choice for collectors and enthusiasts of vintage British watches.
The watch is in beautiful vintage condition with only minor signs of age, nothing we wouldn’t expect to see on any watch of this age! It is a beautiful piece that looks fantastic on the wrist.
This watch is offered for sale as seen, as the watches service history is unknown and we are selling it on behalf of a watch collector’s family who have asked us to help sell an entire collection. As there are quite a few watches to dispose of, the clients do not wish to spend unnecessary money on servicing each watch before its sold so we have priced the watches to reflect it being sold un-serviced and without a warranty but it can be arranged with our watchmaker at an additional cost if you wish. Once you have made the purchase please add a note when placing it in your basket and we will contact you to discuss this. Once serviced the watch will be given a 12-month warranty.
