Unique looking Unbranded Trench Watch with Silver Half half-hunter protection Case

Trench watches, also known as “wristlets” during their initial phase, are early wristwatches that emerged during World War I. They represent a significant transition from pocket watches to wristwatches and are notable for their unique design characteristics tailored to the needs of soldiers in the trenches.

This unusual-looking thing is a traditional half-hunter trench watch approximately dating to the First World War. “wristlets,” as they were called, appeared quite radical at the time. The demands of trench warfare necessitated protecting soldiers’ watches during the frequent entries and exit from the trenches. As a result, safeguarding the watch crystal became a primary concern.

The Sterling silver case is engraved AGR, denoting it to be originally made by Arthur George Rendell of Clerkenwell Road, London who was an importer of Swiss watches from 1907. On the inside caseback, you can also see various import marks as well as a serial number but we have not been able to find much information regarding its origins.

Underneath the protection case, a gorgeous white enamel dial with traditional large black numerals, sub-seconds counter at 6 and red 12. In addition to this sits a beautifully aged set of cathedral hands adding a touch of class to a somewhat robust timepiece.

The overall condition of this watch is good barring the usual signs of wear you can expect from a watch over 100 years old. It is mechanically sound and running well, although we do not know when it was last serviced.
