A Super Retro Longines Comet with an Eye-Catching Mid-Blue Mystery Dial in Superb Condition, a Very Striking Watch, c.1970
The Longines Comet watch, introduced in the early 1970s, is a striking example of mid-century modern design and innovation. Renowned for its distinctive aesthetic, the Comet features an eye-catching dial with two rotating disksone for hours and one for minutesresembling a comet’s trail across the sky. This unique time-telling method set it apart from traditional analog watches.
Longines, a Swiss luxury watchmaker established in 1832, was already celebrated for precision and elegance. The Comet emerged during an era when watchmakers were experimenting with futuristic designs to captivate a new generation of consumers. Its avant-garde style reflected the bold spirit of the time while maintaining Longines’ hallmark craftsmanship.
Though it was produced for a limited period, the Longines Comet remains highly sought after by collectors today. Its innovative design and historical significance make it not just a timepiece but also a piece of horological art that captures an era of exploration and creativity in watchmaking history
What’s on Offer
Well you can certainly see the free-spirited 1970s in this watch – with a likeness to the Omega Dynamics of the same era, this watch smashes retro cool out of the park – just look at that dial which is in fact known as a ‘mystery dial’ because it has two rotating discs the hour disc to the centre is mounted with a broad luminescent arrow-form pointer which indicates the hours on a chapter ring; minutes are shown via the circular comet mounted on the slim blue outer disc which points to the minutes calibrated at the dials edge, soit is not immediately apparent to the viewer how the hours and minutes advance.
The dial is very reminiscent of the Lambretta logo minus the red, and I absolutely love it. The round dial encapsulated within the brushed steel, rounded-off TV case makes for an eye-catching piece with bags of charisma, this is almost too cool to sell! But alas, we have to! The watch is paired with a stainless bracelet and looks superb on the wrist with its robust proportions. In such nice condition, we don’t expect this watch to stick around, blink and you’ll miss it!
